Jean-Claude can't know what he's thinking, or that he'd misinterpreted his too-covert suggestion that he remain in St. Louis longer. If nothing else, he'd be the last person to suggest that the solution is to ignore his abilities as much as possible, and remain isolated. Watching him, he does recognize that his comment hasn't quite landed.
